The Yellow Wallpaper
A woman suffering from what her physician husband calls temporary nervous depression is brought to a rented country house for the summer and installed in the upstairs nursery, with barred windows and a pattern of yellow wallpaper she comes to hate. Forbidden to write, to work or to see friends, she keeps a secret journal in which she describes the paper, its smell, its pattern that seems to move, and the woman she begins to see crawling behind it. Gilman published the story in 1892, drawing on her own treatment with the "rest cure" after the birth of her daughter, and sent a copy to the doctor who had prescribed it. It is a horror story and a feminist document at once. Read it online in your browser on Vinteuil; the opening pages are free.
