Herland
Herland, serialized in 1915 in Charlotte Perkins Gilman's magazine The Forerunner, is a utopian novel told by Vandyck Jennings, a sociologist who with two friends, the gallant Jeff and the womanizing Terry, flies into an unexplored mountain country and finds a nation of women that has reproduced without men for two thousand years. Captured and taught the language, the three men learn how Herland manages education, agriculture, religion and motherhood, and each reacts according to his character. Gilman uses the visitors' assumptions to expose what her own society took for natural, and the comedy is at the men's expense. The book was not published in volume form until 1979. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
