Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1860–1935) was an American writer, lecturer and feminist theorist, born in Hartford, Connecticut, a great-niece of Harriet Beecher Stowe. After the birth of her daughter in 1885 she fell into a depression and was treated with the "rest cure" by the neurologist S. Weir Mitchell, an experience she turned into "The Yellow Wallpaper" (1892). She left her marriage, moved to California and supported herself by lecturing; Women and Economics (1898) argued that women's dependence on men was the root of their subjection. She wrote a monthly magazine single-handed for seven years and the utopian novel Herland. Ill with cancer, she ended her life in 1935.
