This fourth volume of The Writings of Thomas Paine, edited by Moncure Daniel Conway, contains The Age of Reason, which Paine wrote in France in 1793 and 1795, partly in the shadow of the guillotine. Conway's introduction sets out the circumstances of its writing, including Paine's arrest during the Terror. In the first part Paine sets out his deist creed, rejecting revealed religion, churches and miracles while affirming belief in one God and a life to come; in the second he examines the books of the Old and New Testaments and argues that they cannot be the word of God. Clear, irreverent and widely read, it made Paine notorious and shaped freethought for generations. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
