The Writings of Thomas Paine — Volume 2 (1779-1792): The Rights of Man
This second volume of Moncure Daniel Conway's edition of The Writings of Thomas Paine contains Rights of Man in both its parts, with Conway's introduction on its composition and reception. Part One, published in 1791, answers Edmund Burke's attack on the French Revolution, defending the right of each generation to govern itself and dismissing hereditary monarchy and aristocracy. Part Two, published the following year, moves from principle to practice, setting out a plan for representative government and proposing public provision for the poor, the old and the young, paid for by reduced military spending and a graduated tax on large estates. The book sold in enormous numbers and led to Paine's prosecution in England. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
