The Writings of Thomas Paine — Volume 1 (1774-1779): The American Crisis
This volume of the Writings of Thomas Paine, collected and edited by his biographer Moncure Daniel Conway, contains The American Crisis, the series of pamphlets Paine published during the American Revolution. The first, issued in December 1776 when the Continental Army was in retreat, opens with the famous line "These are the times that try men's souls" and was read aloud to Washington's troops. The later numbers address Lord Howe, General Howe, the Earl of Carlisle and the people of England, attack loyalists and war profiteers, argue questions of finance and policy, and celebrate the coming of peace. Written in plain, forceful prose, they show Paine at his most effective as a propagandist for independence. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
