The writings of Origen, Vol. 2 (of 2)
This volume of the Ante-Nicene Christian Library, published in Edinburgh in 1872, contains books two to eight of Origen's Against Celsus in the English translation of Frederick Crombie, with the last two books translated by W. H. Cairns. Celsus, a pagan philosopher of the second century, had written an attack on Christianity, and Origen, the great Alexandrian theologian, answered it point by point some decades later, defending the life and miracles of Jesus, the prophecies, the resurrection and the moral teaching of the Church against charges of credulity, magic and sedition. Because Origen quotes his opponent at length, the work also preserves much of Celsus's lost book. It is a major document of early Christian apologetics.
