Origen (c. 185–254) was a Christian scholar and theologian of Alexandria, the most learned and prolific writer of the early church. The son of a martyr, he taught in the catechetical school of his native city, and later moved to Caesarea in Palestine after a quarrel with his bishop. He compiled the Hexapla, a six-column edition of the Old Testament, wrote commentaries and homilies on most books of the Bible, composed the first systematic Christian theology in On First Principles and answered pagan criticism in Against Celsus. Tortured in the persecution of Decius, he died of his injuries, and some of his teachings were later condemned.
