The writings of Origen, Vol. 1 (of 2)
The Writings of Origen, Vol. 1 is the first of two volumes devoted to the Alexandrian theologian in the Ante-Nicene Christian Library, translated by Frederick Crombie and published in 1869. It contains De Principiis, Origen's treatise on first principles, the earliest attempt at a systematic Christian theology, preserved mainly in the Latin version of Rufinus, which treats God, the Son and the Spirit, rational creatures and their fall, the world and its end, free will and the interpretation of scripture. There follow the letter of Africanus to Origen on the story of Susanna and Origen's reply, his letter to Gregory, and the opening books of Against Celsus, his long answer to a pagan philosopher's attack on Christianity.
