The Works of Alexander Pope, Volume 2 (of 10)
Poetry - Volume 2
This second volume of the Elwin and Courthope edition of The Works of Alexander Pope, published in 1871, contains the poems on which his reputation chiefly rests. An Essay on Criticism lays down the rules of taste in couplets that have become proverbs; The Rape of the Lock turns a stolen curl into a mock epic in five cantos; the Elegy to the Memory of an Unfortunate Lady and Eloisa to Abelard show his pathetic vein; and An Essay on Man, in four epistles, with The Universal Prayer, sets out his philosophy of order and submission. The commentary and notes of Bishop Warburton, Pope's chosen editor, are reprinted, with the Victorian editors' own annotations. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first poems are free.
