An Essay on Man; Moral Essays and Satires
This volume, edited with an introduction by Henry Morley, gathers the philosophical and satirical poems of Alexander Pope's maturity. An Essay on Man, published in 1733 and 1734 in four epistles addressed to Lord Bolingbroke, sets out a view of man's place in the created order and gave English such lines as "Hope springs eternal in the human breast." The Moral Essays follow, including the epistles to a lady on the characters of women and to Lord Burlington on the use of riches; then the Epistle to Dr. Arbuthnot, Pope's defense of his own career, and the Imitations of Horace, in which he turned the Roman poet's satires and epistles against the London of George II.
