The Works of Alexander Pope, Volume 1
Poetry - Volume 1
This first volume of poetry in the Elwin and Courthope edition of Pope's works, published in 1871, contains the early poems, with the Rev. Whitwell Elwin's long and skeptical introduction. Here are the translations from Statius and Ovid, the modernizations of Chaucer, January and May and The Wife of Bath, The Temple of Fame, the four Pastorals written in Pope's teens with his discourse on pastoral poetry, Messiah and Windsor Forest, together with the recommendatory poems by friends that prefaced the 1717 edition and Pope's own preface. Elwin's notes, which quote the earlier commentators and correct them, are a running argument with the poet about his honesty as well as his verse. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first poems are free.
