The Willows

by Algernon Blackwood

About 1 h 19 min of reading5 chapters

The Willows, published in 1907, is a long story by Algernon Blackwood about two friends canoeing down the Danube who camp on a sandy island in the marshes below Pressburg, where the river spreads into channels among endless willow bushes. Through a day and two nights the island shrinks, the willows seem to move, a body passes in the water, and the men come to feel that they have strayed into a region where something indifferent to humanity is probing at them. Blackwood offers no monster and almost no event; the dread is built from wind, water and the narrator's attempts to stay rational. H. P. Lovecraft singled it out as the supernatural tale he admired above all others. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
