The Wendigo
The Wendigo, published in 1910, is Algernon Blackwood's novella of the Canadian backwoods and the thing that lives in them. A small moose-hunting party, the Scottish doctor Cathcart, his nephew Simpson, a divinity student, and their guides Hank Davis and the French Canadian Defago, camps far up in the forest north of Rat Portage. Defago grows uneasy, speaks of a smell on the wind, and in the night is heard crying out that his feet are burning before he is carried off at a speed no man could run. Simpson follows tracks that change as they go. Blackwood builds his terror from silence, distance and the wilderness itself, and the tale is often named among the finest in its kind.
