Algernon Blackwood (1869–1951) was an English writer of supernatural fiction. The son of a Post Office official of strong evangelical views, he was educated in Germany and at Edinburgh, then spent ten hard years in Canada and New York as farmer, hotel keeper, reporter and model before returning to England. The Empty House (1906), John Silence, Physician Extraordinary (1908) and the stories "The Willows" and "The Wendigo" established him as a master of the uncanny, in which nature rather than the dead is the source of dread. He wrote novels, children's books and plays, and in old age became known as a storyteller on BBC radio and television.
