The Tribes and Castes of the Central Provinces of India, Volume 3
The third volume of R. V. Russell's Tribes and Castes of the Central Provinces of India, published in 1916, continues the alphabetical articles, beginning with the Gadaria shepherds and blanket-weavers and the Gadba and Ganda tribes. Its longest article is on the Gonds, the largest tribal people of central India, whose history, clans, marriage customs, festivals, religion and former kingdom at Garha-Mandla receive extended treatment; the Gosain ascetics, the Gujar herdsmen and the Gurao temple servants follow among many others. Each article records origin legends, subdivisions, rites of marriage, birth and death, religious practice and occupation, with photographs from the field. The work was prepared for the ethnographic survey of India with the help of Rai Bahadur Hira Lal. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
