The Tribes and Castes of the Central Provinces of India, published in 1916 in four volumes by R. V. Russell of the Indian Civil Service with the assistance of Rai Bahadur Hira Lal, is an ethnographic survey of the peoples of what is now largely Madhya Pradesh. This second volume begins the alphabetical articles, opening with the Agaria iron-smelters and the Ahir cowherds and continuing through the Bania merchants, the Banjara carriers and many others. Each article describes a group's origin and subdivisions, marriage and birth customs, funeral rites, religion, occupation and social standing, with photographs. The work was compiled under the official ethnographic survey of India and reflects the categories of its time.
