This first volume contains Russell's long introductory essay on caste, which sets out the province's population, the meaning and tests of caste, the occupational and racial theories of its origin, the position of the village menials and the non-Aryan tribes, totemism, exogamy and marriage customs, followed by articles on the religions and sects of the province and a glossary of minor castes and synonyms.
