About 4 h 03 min of reading35 chapters

The Toys of Peace, published in 1919, is the last collection of short stories by Saki, the pen name of H. H. Munro, who was killed in France in 1916 while serving as a soldier. It opens with a memoir of the author by his friend Rothay Reynolds and gathers some thirty pieces, among them The Toys of Peace, Louise, Tea, The Disappearance of Crispina Umberleigh, The Wolves of Cernogratz, The Interlopers, The Phantom Luncheon, Bertie's Christmas Eve and The Hedgehog. Cruel, elegant and funny, the stories target the follies of Edwardian society with Saki's characteristic blend of malice and fantasy, and a few, such as The Interlopers, carry a darker edge. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first story is free.
