Saki was the pen name of Hector Hugh Munro (1870–1916), a British writer born in Burma, where his father served in the police, and raised in Devon by two strict aunts who later furnished material for his stories. After a spell in the Burma police he became a political satirist and foreign correspondent, and from Reginald (1904) through The Chronicles of Clovis (1911) and Beasts and Super-Beasts (1914) he published the short, elegant and cruel stories on which his fame rests, along with the novels The Unbearable Bassington and When William Came. He enlisted as a private in 1914, refused a commission, and was killed by a sniper near Beaumont-Hamel.
