Beasts and Super-Beasts

by Saki

About 4 h 07 min of reading37 chapters

Beasts and Super-Beasts, published in 1914, was the last collection of stories Saki saw into print before he was killed in the First World War. Its thirty-six pieces are short, polished and malicious: "The Open Window," in which a girl's improvised ghost story drives a nervous visitor from the house; "The Lumber-Room," where a child outwits a tyrannical aunt; "The Schartz-Metterklume Method," "The Storyteller," "Esmé," "The Boar-Pig" and "Laura." Animals, children and the unflappable young man Clovis regularly get the better of the English upper middle class, and the endings turn with a snap. Saki's economy and cruelty have kept the stories in print for a century. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first story is free.
