The Torrents of Spring
Dmitri Sanin, a Russian gentleman of fifty-two, finds a small garnet cross in a drawer and remembers Frankfurt thirty years earlier, when a girl ran out of a confectioner's shop to beg his help for her fainting brother. She was Gemma Roselli, and within days he had fought a duel for her, broken her engagement and asked her to marry him. Then he met the wife of an old schoolfellow, Maria Nikolaevna Polozova, who wanted to buy his estate and decided to buy him instead. Turgenev published the novella in 1872, and it is the story of a weak man's one chance at happiness and how he threw it away. This volume, in Constance Garnett's translation, also includes First Love and Mumu. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
