Fathers and Sons
Fathers and Sons, published in 1862, is Ivan Turgenev's novel of the gap between the liberal gentry of the 1840s and the young radicals of the 1860s. Arkady Kirsanov comes home from the university to his father's estate bringing his friend Bazarov, a medical student who calls himself a nihilist and believes in nothing he cannot dissect. Bazarov's contempt for art, tradition and his hosts' gentle manners provokes a duel with Arkady's uncle Pavel, while his own defenses are breached by the cool widow Anna Odintsova. The portrait of Bazarov angered both the old and the young in Russia, and Turgenev always called him his favorite child. This edition gives C. J. Hogarth's translation of 1921 with an introduction.
