A Sportsman's Sketches, Volume 2
Works of Ivan Turgenev, Volume 2
A Sportsman's Sketches, published in book form in 1852, is the collection of short pieces that made Ivan Turgenev famous. A hunter wanders the countryside of central Russia with his gun and his dog and records the landowners, serfs and villagers he meets. This second volume of Constance Garnett's translation contains the later sketches, among them "Tatyana Borissovna and Her Nephew," "Death," "The Singers," with its contest between two village singers in a tavern, "Piotr Petrovitch Karataev" and "The Tryst," followed by the lyrical epilogue "Forest and Steppe." Turgenev's quiet sympathy for the serfs gave the book a moral force that was felt far beyond literature.
