The Threshold Covenant; or, The Beginning of Religious Rites, published in 1896 by the American clergyman and orientalist H. Clay Trumbull, argues that the doorway of the house was mankind's first altar. Trumbull gathers from travelers, the Bible, classical authors and folklore the customs of welcoming a guest with blood at the door, lifting a bride over the threshold, laying foundations in blood and marking doorposts with the red hand, and traces them from the family dwelling to the temple and the national border. He then reads the Hebrew Passover as a threshold covenant between Jehovah and Israel, and the Christian rite as its continuation. A supplement prints the comments of scholars including Sayce, Hommel and Tiele. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
