H. Clay Trumbull, an American Congregational minister and editor of the Sunday School Times, developed The Blood Covenant from lectures given in Philadelphia and published it in 1885. He collects reports of the rite by which two people become brothers by exchanging or tasting each other's blood, from the Semitic peoples, Africa, Europe, ancient Egypt and the classical world, and argues that this rite of covenanting by blood lies behind the sacredness of blood across many cultures. He then reads biblical themes of sacrifice, circumcision, the Passover and the Lord's Supper in that light. Its comparative method is dated, but the book was influential in Christian teaching on covenant. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
