The Theistic Conception of the World

by B. F. Cocker

An Essay in Opposition to Certain Tendencies of Modern Thought

About 8 h 37 min of reading15 chapters

The Theistic Conception of the World, published in 1875, is Benjamin Franklin Cocker's answer to what he saw as the drift of advanced thought away from belief in a personal God. Cocker, professor of mental and moral philosophy at the University of Michigan, takes as his antagonists David Friedrich Strauss's The Old Faith and the New and the materialism of Herbert Spencer, and sets against them an account of God as creator, of the creation and its history, of conservation and the relation of God to the world, of providence in human history, of special providence and prayer, and of moral government. He accepts much of the science of his day while denying that it explains itself. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
