Christianity and Greek Philosophy

by B. F. Cocker

or, the relation between spontaneous and reflective thought in Greece and the positive teaching of Christ and His Apostles

About 12 h 40 min of reading23 chapters

Benjamin Franklin Cocker, professor of moral and mental philosophy at the University of Michigan, published Christianity and Greek Philosophy in 1870. Starting from the apostle Paul's speech in Athens about the altar to an Unknown God, he argues that Christianity rests not only on the events of Palestine but on the deepest ideas of human reason. He examines the religion of the Athenians, asks whether God can be known by reason, and surveys the philosophers from Thales and Heraclitus through Pythagoras and Parmenides to Socrates and Plato, whose ideas receive long chapters. It reflects a nineteenth-century effort to show that Greek thought prepared the way for the Gospel.
