The Tenant of Wildfell Hall
The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, published in 1848, was Anne Brontë's second and last novel and the most controversial book the three sisters wrote. A young widow calling herself Helen Graham moves into the half-ruined Wildfell Hall with her small son and sets the neighborhood gossiping. The farmer Gilbert Markham falls in love with her, and to answer the rumors she gives him her diary. It tells how she married the charming Arthur Huntingdon against advice, watched him sink into drink, adultery and cruelty, and finally did what no respectable Victorian wife was supposed to do: she left him and took her child. Anne Brontë's plain account of marriage without illusions shocked reviewers and was suppressed by Charlotte after her death.
