Agnes Grey
Agnes Grey, published in 1847 alongside her sister Emily's Wuthering Heights, is Anne Brontë's first novel and draws closely on her own years as a governess. Agnes, the younger daughter of a poor clergyman in the north of England, takes a post with the Bloomfields, whose children are spoiled and cruel, and then with the Murrays, whose daughter Rosalie is a heartless flirt. Overlooked by her employers and despised by their children, she finds her only sympathy in the curate Mr. Weston and in her visits to the cottagers. The book is short, quiet and exact about the humiliations of a dependent position, and its restraint is its strength. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
