Anne Brontë (1820–1849) was an English novelist and poet, the youngest of the three Brontë sisters. Raised at Haworth parsonage in Yorkshire, she worked for five years as a governess, an experience that gave her the material for her first novel, Agnes Grey, published in 1847 under the name Acton Bell alongside Emily's Wuthering Heights. Her second, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, a frank account of a marriage to a drunken and abusive husband, was a success and a scandal in 1848; after her death Charlotte prevented its republication. Her poems appeared with her sisters' in 1846. She died of tuberculosis at twenty-nine in Scarborough, where she is buried.
