The Son of Monte-Cristo is a continuation of Alexandre Dumas's novel written by Jules Lermina and first published in French in 1881; this English version appeared in 1904 in a collected edition of Dumas's works. The second volume opens with the acrobat Fanfaro telling his story to Monte-Cristo and his friends: a night ride through the Black Forest in December 1813, the Marquis de Fougereuse, the servant Pierre Labarre and a traveling troupe. The narrative then returns to the count's son Spero, to the singer Jane Zild, to the villain Benedetto and his revenge, and to a chain of trials, autopsies, shots, disappearances and confessions in the manner of the original. Lermina keeps the pace of a serial. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
