Noli Me Tangere, published in Berlin in 1887, is the novel that made José Rizal the national hero of the Philippines and contributed to his execution by the Spanish in 1896. Crisóstomo Ibarra returns from Europe to his hometown of San Diego to build a school and marry his childhood sweetheart María Clara, only to collide with the friars who control the town and the colonial administration behind them. Around him Rizal arranges a gallery of types, the mad Sisa and her sons, the scheming Padre Salví, the philosopher Tasio, and the mysterious Elías. Charles E. Derbyshire's translation, published in 1912 under the title The Social Cancer, was the first complete English version. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
