The Reign of Greed is Charles E. Derbyshire's translation of El Filibusterismo, the second novel of José Rizal, published in 1891 as the sequel to Noli Me Tangere. Thirteen years after the events of the first book, a mysterious jeweler named Simoun has become the intimate of the Spanish governor-general and uses his wealth to corrupt the colony further, for reasons of his own. Around him move the student Basilio, who wants only to finish his medical studies, young men petitioning for a Spanish academy, friars, officials and a people who have not yet decided to rise. Darker and angrier than its predecessor, the novel was banned in the Philippines and helped bring its author to the firing squad. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
