The Indolence of the Filipino

by José Rizal

Translated by Charles E. DerbyshireAbout 1 h 04 min of reading6 chapters

The Indolence of the Filipino is the essay José Rizal published in installments in the Madrid paper La Solidaridad in 1890. Taking up the colonial charge that Filipinos are lazy, Rizal grants that indolence exists and then asks where it came from, answering with history: the wars and forced labor that followed the Spanish conquest, the decline of native trade and shipbuilding, the piracy that depopulated the coasts, the example of idle officials and friars, an education that taught submission, and the absence of any incentive to work when the fruits were taken away. The essay belongs with his novels as a case for reform. This edition presents Charles E. Derbyshire's translation with historical notes by James A. Robertson. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
