The Small House at Allington
Lily Dale, who lives with her widowed mother and sister in the Small House lent to them by their uncle the squire, falls in love with Adolphus Crosbie, a rising London civil servant. He proposes, then jilts her within weeks for an earl's daughter, and the rest of the novel watches the consequences: Lily's stubborn refusal to be consoled, the devotion of the clumsy Johnny Eames, and Crosbie's discovery of what he has bought. Anthony Trollope published it in 1864 as the fifth of his Barsetshire novels, and it can be read on its own. Lily Dale was the character his readers wrote to him about most, and he refused to give them the ending they wanted. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
