An Old Man's Love
An Old Man's Love, published in 1884 after Trollope's death, was the last novel he completed. William Whittlestaff, a bachelor of fifty in a quiet Hampshire house, takes in Mary Lawrie, the orphaned daughter of an old friend, and after a year asks her to marry him. She accepts out of gratitude, having told him that she once loved a young man named John Gordon who went off to make his fortune in the diamond fields, and on the very day of her acceptance Gordon walks in, rich. The book is short and the problem simple: which of two decent men should give way, and who has the right to decide. Trollope is fair to everyone, including the housekeeper, Mrs. Baggett, who has opinions. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
