The Sketch-Book of Geoffrey Crayon
The Sketch-Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., published in parts in 1819 and 1820, made Washington Irving the first American author with a European reputation. Most of its thirty-odd pieces are essays and sketches of England by a sentimental traveler: rural life, country churches and funerals, Westminster Abbey, the Boar's Head Tavern, Stratford-on-Avon, Little Britain, John Bull, and the five Christmas chapters at Bracebridge Hall that helped shape the Victorian idea of the holiday. Among them stand the American tales that have outlived the rest, Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, together with The Spectre Bridegroom and two essays on the Indians of New England. Irving's revised edition adds a preface on the book's reception. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
