Knickerbocker's History of New York, Complete
Washington Irving published A History of New York in 1809 under the name of Diedrich Knickerbocker, an eccentric old historian who had supposedly vanished from his lodgings, leaving the manuscript behind. In mock-heroic style, the book recounts the history of New Amsterdam from the creation of the world to the end of Dutch rule, through the governorships of Wouter Van Twiller, the doubtful William Kieft and the stubborn, peg-legged Peter Stuyvesant, who finally surrenders the colony to the English. Irving's satire touches on American politics of his own day as well as on Dutch habits of pipe, pudding and slow deliberation. The name Knickerbocker came to stand for New Yorkers themselves. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
