The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
In a drowsy Dutch valley on the Hudson, where the air itself seems to encourage dreaming and ghost stories, a lanky Connecticut schoolmaster named Ichabod Crane sets his sights on Katrina Van Tassel, the plump heiress of the richest farm in the neighborhood. His rival is Brom Bones, a brawny local hero with a taste for practical jokes. After a harvest party full of tales about the Headless Horseman, a Hessian trooper who rides the roads at night looking for his head, Ichabod sets off for home alone. Irving published the story in 1820 in The Sketch Book, under the name Geoffrey Crayon, and it became, with "Rip Van Winkle," the first American fiction read everywhere. Its ending leaves the reader to decide. Read it online in your browser on Vinteuil; the opening pages are free.
