The Principles of Psychology, Volume 1 (of 2)

by William James

About 19 h 05 min of reading121 chapters

The Principles of Psychology, published in 1890 after twelve years of work, is William James's attempt to found psychology as a natural science while refusing to reduce the mind to the brain. This first volume moves from the functions of the brain and the laws of habit to the methods of psychology, the relation of mind to body, the stream of thought, the consciousness of self, attention, conception, discrimination, association, the perception of time and memory. The chapter on the stream of consciousness gave the phrase to the language, and the chapter on the self is still read. James writes as a man thinking aloud, with examples from his own life, and the book is as much literature as science. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
