The Letters of William James, Vol. 1
The Letters of William James, edited by his son Henry James and published in 1920, gathers the correspondence of the American philosopher and psychologist. This first volume runs from 1861 to 1890, the years of James's long search for a vocation. The letters, linked by the editor's commentary, follow him through his study of art and then science, his medical studies at Harvard, the Brazilian expedition with Louis Agassiz, his years in Germany, his crisis of depression, and his marriage and teaching at Harvard, to the writing of The Principles of Psychology. Written to his parents, his brother Henry, his sister Alice and friends such as Charles Renouvier, they are witty, affectionate and searching. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first letters are free.
