Psychology: Briefer Course
Psychology: Briefer Course, published in 1892, is William James's own abridgment of his two-volume Principles of Psychology, made for students and for the general reader and known to generations of undergraduates as Jimmy. James cut the long discussions of other theorists and the physiological detail, kept the chapters on sensation, the brain, habit, the stream of consciousness, the self, attention, association, memory, imagination, perception, reasoning, instinct, emotion and will, and added a plain introduction to the structure of the nervous system and the senses. The result is shorter but no less lively: the famous descriptions of habit as the flywheel of society and of consciousness as a stream are here, in prose that made psychology readable. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
