The Pilgrim's Progress from this world to that which is to come
Delivered under the similitude of a dream, by John Bunyan
The Pilgrim's Progress is John Bunyan's allegory of the Christian life, written in part while he was imprisoned for preaching without a license and published in 1678, with a second part following in 1684. Christian flees the City of Destruction with a burden on his back and travels toward the Celestial City by way of the Slough of Despond, the Hill Difficulty, the Valley of the Shadow of Death, Vanity Fair and Doubting Castle, meeting Faithful, Hopeful, Mr. Worldly Wiseman, Giant Despair and many others. The second part follows his wife Christiana and their children on the same road. Written in plain, vigorous English by a Bedford tinker, it was for two centuries the most read English book after the Bible.
