The Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan Every Child Can Read
This edition of The Pilgrim's Progress was prepared by Jesse Lyman Hurlbut for a series of classic books simplified for children. It keeps John Bunyan's story of Christian's journey from the City of Destruction, through the Slough of Despond, the Interpreter's House, Vanity Fair and the Valley of the Shadow of Death to the Celestial City, and the second part in which his wife Christiana and their children follow with Great-heart as their guide, but shortens the theological conversations that Bunyan wrote for grown readers. A short tale, "The Little Pilgrim," about a girl who tried to go on pilgrimage, is added at the end. The allegory of 1678 comes through intact, in plainer words. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
