The Phoenix and the Carpet

by E. Nesbit

About 4 h 06 min of reading13 chapters

The Phoenix and the Carpet, published in 1904, is the second of E. Nesbit's books about Cyril, Anthea, Robert and Jane, the children who met the Psammead in Five Children and It. When their mother buys a secondhand carpet for the nursery, an egg rolls out of it, and the egg hatches into a vain, talkative Phoenix. The carpet turns out to be a wishing carpet, able to carry the children wherever they wish, and their adventures take them to a tower with no top, a sunny southern island and an Indian bazaar, among other places. As always with Nesbit, the magic causes as many problems as it solves, and the comedy comes from the children's matter-of-fact reactions. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
