New Treasure Seekers; Or, The Bastable Children in Search of a Fortune
New Treasure Seekers, published in 1904, is the third and last of E. Nesbit's books about the Bastable children, after The Story of the Treasure Seekers and The Wouldbegoods. Oswald Bastable again tells the story, with his usual failure to conceal that he is the author, and the six children's schemes to restore the family fortunes or do good go wrong in thirteen episodes: a stowaway on the way to Rome, a conscience pudding at Christmas, the unpleasant cousin Archibald, a smuggler's revenge, a fortune-telling booth at a bazaar and an attempt to help the poor and needy. The comedy depends throughout on the distance between what Oswald understands and what the reader does.
