Five Children and It
Five Children and It, published in 1902 after serialization in the Strand, is the first of E. Nesbit's three books about Cyril, Anthea, Robert, Jane and their baby brother the Lamb. Sent to a white house in Kent for the summer, the children dig in a gravel pit and uncover a Psammead, or sand-fairy, a furry, bad-tempered creature with eyes on stalks that can grant one wish a day, each ending at sunset. They ask to be beautiful as the day, to have golden guineas, to grow wings, to live in a besieged castle, to be grown up and to meet real Indians, and each time the wish turns out to have a flaw.
