The Nicomachean Ethics is Aristotle's inquiry into the good life for a human being, probably compiled from his lectures in the fourth century BC. He begins from the observation that every action aims at some good and asks what the final good is, answering that it is happiness understood as activity in accordance with virtue. The ten books examine moral virtue as a settled disposition lying between extremes, with detailed studies of courage, temperance, generosity, justice and the rest; responsibility and choice; the intellectual virtues; weakness of will; pleasure; friendship, to which two books are given; and finally the contemplative life. This edition opens with an introduction by J. A. Smith on the relation of the Ethics to the Politics. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
