Politics: A Treatise on Government

by Aristotle

Translated by William EllisAbout 6 h 51 min of reading113 chapters

Aristotle's Politics, composed in the fourth century BC, asks what the state is for and how it should be arranged. Starting from the household and the village, Aristotle argues that the city exists not merely for survival but for the good life. He examines slavery and property, criticizes Plato's Republic, classifies constitutions into kingship, aristocracy, polity and their corruptions, and analyzes why revolutions happen and how regimes preserve themselves. He favors a large middle class as the most stable foundation and devotes the last books to the ideal city and the education of its citizens. The translation is by William Ellis, first published in 1776. The work remains a starting point for political theory. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
